There’s snow up high, yet the mountain doesn’t open until Thanksgiving and because we don’t like waiting– sometimes we’re downright impatient– four of us decided to go get a sneak peek.
Neal Beidleman, Pete Anzalone, Christy and I made up the eager foursome and found things to be pretty good if not downright awesome by pre-opening day standards. One run in particular might be worth a second visit though I won’t divulge exactly where. It should be obvious. Check out the pics.

the guy in the green jacket looks like he’s skiing at Hunta Mt , in NY and the guy in the blue jacket looks really old. just kiddin’ way to rip the pow!!
“looks old”? I hear 50 is the new 30.
Hunta, a.k.a the ‘snowmaking capitol of the world’? Funny that Pete commented how conditions down low were reminiscent of days at that NY ski mecca.
“Deceptively good”, very clever Ted. Thanks for convincing me to get off the couch. I can’t tell you where we skied yesterday but I will say it wasn’t very Difficult skiing. Powder, sunshine, good friends; Let the games begin! Cheers, John Doyle
OK – I just spent about 20 minutes going through one of my favorite books, Aspen Ski and Snowboard Guide, and I’m stumped. Which run is that?
Nice John. It looked thin from Loge but I’m sure it was good in the shade.
Scott- Look in the Highlands section and get the clue from the post(title specifically). I can’t wait to tell Neal (in blue), that someone actually bought his book! If you’d like, I might be able to get it autographed.
ted
nice Ted! i was thoroughly *deceived* (or at least perplexed) by most of the pictures – they are completely devoid of any solid clues… except for the one with a particular traverse a few of us may remember from the past! definitely looks tasty up there – may have to sample myself prior to turkey on thursday…
Thanks, Ted, and I found the run. I have cruised by the entry to that run several times when I’ve been at the ski area with the superb photo of Cher in the men’s bathroom in the former supermarket, now restaurant (top level). Perhaps I’ll improve enough the next time I’m out there to try something on the Oly side; I’ve always wanted to head in there but I’m too risk averse. Neal’s book is really good and I enjoy dipping into it from time to time when I’m really yearning to be in Aspen. One day, the ski patrol is going to spot a short rotund skier skiing down the mountain carrying that photo of Cher.
been to Hunta…… never again. and i’m really hoping 50 is the new 30. nice pix.
